What is The Giver about?
The Ceremony of Twelve is a very special event in the Community. Each year every 12-year-old is assigned a safe lifetime-job by a central Committee of Elders. Jonas is very anxious about the coming Ceremony of Twelve. On the day of the Ceremony he does not get a regular job, but is selected to become the Receiver of Memory. They have chosen him because he has a special gift: the gift to see beyond, to see and understand more than others. At first, he does not know what this means. But when the Giver transmits the memories of the past on to Jonas he slowly gets to know that he is selected to carry the memories of the whole community of the past, memories nobody in the community has. Step by step, Jonas learns that his community is not as wonderful as he thought it is: people do not know any pain, war, disaster, illness, hunger, not even death; and they do not know snow, color, sex and love. There is equality ("sameness") everywhere: all families ("family units") consist of four people; women don?t have to suffer pain giving birth to children; there are special birthmothers who do this job! When Jonas gets the memories of the past he realizes what the word release really means...Therefore he makes a very important decision that might kill him and a small baby...
